Exclusive: A Preview of Timbaland’s “Solo” Record Blows Our Minds

This year, producer Timbaland went from shadowy hip-hop genius to king of pop (a.k.a. “that guy in every video”) — and judging by the sneak peek we got of his upcoming “solo” album, his reign may well continue in ‘07. Timbaland Presents Shock Value, due in March, is set to include songs with Justin Timberlake, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Nelly Furtado, M.I.A. and Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger — plus She Wants Revenge, Elton John and the Hives. While we haven’t heard the Hives track yet (can’t wait), we did check out the song with She Wants Revenge, which has Tim rapping and singing over the band’s guitar lines, with Justin Warfield coming in on the chorus. We also heard the ultra-poppy “Scream,” with Scherzinger, which features a simple, tambourine-bashing rhythm track — and someone having a very loud (fake?) orgasm in the background.

Timbaland Nabs 50 Cent, Dr. Dre For LP, Starts Timberlake Gossip Frenzy

Producer reveals plans for domination with help of Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Fall Out Boy, Björk, Elton John.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia — Thanks to his work on recent projects by Justin Timberlake and Nelly Furtado, as well as the upcoming 50 Cent LP, Timbaland is enjoying what he's been accustomed to for the past 10 years of his career — success.

But even with his storied discography of classics for everyone from Aaliyah and Missy Elliott to Jay-Z and LL Cool J, Tim said that over the past couple of years, when he wasn't putting out as much music, he heard whispers that he might be losing his touch.

"Everybody was talking their little trash, y'all know who y'all are," Tim said at his studio last week. "They said, 'Timbaland is falling off.' I don't never fall off. I just relax like a vampire in the coffin. When I wake up, you better be prepared, because somebody is going to get bit on the neck. Next thing you know, I have a slew of vampires running around. When you become the best like me, you never fall off, you just lean back."

Well somebody call Blade, because Count Drac is wide awake and ready to wreak even more havoc next year when his upcoming LP, tentatively titled Timbaland Presents Shock Value, comes out. "I'm not just hip-hop," Tim insisted. "My mission is to take over top-40 radio — what they call popular music, different genres of music — and reach all types of people.

"It seems like Tim reached out to almost everyone in every corner of the music industry for the project, which he's calling a compilation. One track is "what everybody is waiting for," he revealed, "me and Dr. Dre. I did [the beat], it's hard. I got 50, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne. The other stuff is rock: She Wants Revenge, the Hives, I'm about to get the Fall Out Boys, Björk, Elton John." Tim went on to say that he's interested in eventually signing the Hives and M.I.A.

"Last Piece of the Puzzle," his collabo with John, was recorded in Las Vegas. "It was cool. I didn't have him sing, I had him play. I was like, 'Go ahead, John.' I might get a choir to sing on top of it."

Though the album is packed with headline-making names, Tim's first single is already newsworthy. "Give it to Me" has Nelly Furtado, Justin Timberlake and Tim throwing subliminal jabs in their verses, and it's up to the audience to figure it out what — or who — they're talking about. "I seen you try to switch it up, but girl you ain't that dope," Furtado sings. Tim's verse includes the lines, "I'm a real producer and you just a piano man/ Your song moved up the charts I heard, but I'm not a fan/ N---as talking greasy, I'm the one that gave them they chance/ Somebody need to tell them they can't do it like I can."

The Internet has been most abuzz about Timberlake's verse, though, with gossip sites speculating that his harsh words are aimed at Janet Jackson: "I saw you tryin' to act cute on TV, 'Just let me clear the air'/ We missed you on the charts last week/ Damn, that's right, you wasn't there/ Now if sexy never left, then why is everybody on my sh--?/ Don't hate on me just because you didn't come up with it."

A source close to the record said that Timberlake's lyrics have nothing to do with his infamous Super Bowl co-star — but he is responding to another pop artist who has seen career heights few other singers can boast.

Tim's album will come out via his Mosley Music imprint, like Nelly Furtado's Loose. He's hoping to have the LP ready for a March release date.

Mary J. Blige Brushes Off Rumors, 3 new songs on the way

Mary J.'s Greatest-Hits LP Brings Three New Songs, Brushes Off Rumors Reflections - The Journey drops December 12; Blige also working on duets album.

Remember that Mary J. Blige greatest-hits album that was supposed to drop last year before MJB and her label decided to release a studio album instead? Well, Mary's ready to put her career retrospective on wax with Reflections - The Journey.

The album will feature at least three new songs and some of her classic cuts, including "Family Affair" and "Real Love." The LP will be released December 12, and next week in New York, Mary is shooting the video for the Bryan-Michael Cox-produced single "We Ride." Cox co-wrote the song with Johnta Austin.

"She called me and was like, 'I'm doing this Reflections project, and I need you and Johnta to be a part of it,' " Cox said Tuesday from Atlanta. "A few months ago, me and Johnta wrote three songs. I was in L.A. working on a project, and we vibed on three joints. Mary cut all three joints. It's fantastic.

" 'We Ride' is telling people, 'Yo, we want the Mary with pain.' She's like, 'Really? Look, everybody wanna know why Mary ain't mad no more. I ain't mad no more because I have this dude that rides with me. We gonna ride into the sunset. He's a good man. One thing I learned about life is positivity is blessed.' Mary's married, she's happy, in the best shape of her life, her voice is in the best shape of her life. People thought she was over, done, then she came through with The Breakthrough. ... The song 'We Ride' celebrates all of that."

On the song, Blige sings, "From the day to the night we ride/ I see the future, baby, you and I, better with time." The track comes amid several Internet rumors that Mary was breaking up with her husband/manager, Kendu Isaacs.

"It's wild," Cox said of the rumor. "I was just with them a few weeks ago, and we were all laughing about it. When the rumor got to them, they were on vacation together. They took off after the tour. They was like, 'We on the coast of such and such. We chillin'. 'When I heard it, I called immediately, and [Kendu] was like, 'Man, it's all tabloid.' That showed how the media can make up things and throw it out there. They have such a great thing going on, people really gotta know what they got is the real deal. If you know anything about love, it's the real deal."

Cox said he and Mary hit their stride after he made her biggest song to date, last year's "Be Without You," and the chemistry is still present on Reflections - The Journey.

"We did another [song] called 'Reflections,' which is the title track," he said. "They didn't want to call it Greatest Hits because it sounds like your career is almost over. Mary's at a new place in her career. She's taking this time to reflect on the past, and we're looking forward to the future with these new records. 'Reflections' is midtempo; it's gonna be a second single. She called me with the idea. I flew to New York, and we put it together. That joint is crazy, talking about her life, where she comes from. It's similar to 'MJB the MVP,' but it's more personal. It's not so mixtape-ish, even though 'MVP' ended up being a great record. Then there's another record called 'Love Me.' This record is ooooh! We're in the process of getting a guest on the record, but the way it is now, it's really crazy, midtempo. I'm very impressed with Mary's growth."

Their aren't many details available, but Blige is also planning to release an album of duets too. Her label said info — including the release date — is not yet available, but singer Robin Thicke said he's been asked to participate.

Mary J. Blige is putting out a duets album, and [there] happens to be a song on my album right now called 'Ask Myself,' " he revealed. "She turned it into a duet and put it on her duets album."

Player Watch: Timbaland's Right Hand Man, Danjahandz

As production partner to Timbaland, Danja has pounded out beats for the likes of Justin Timberlake, Nelly Furtado, The Game and Notorious B.I.G.'s Biggie Duets album. Currently working on music for Diddy, 50 Cent and Young Jeezy, it's unmistakable that Danja is a Player to Watch in 2006.

Starting from his early adolescence, Virginia Beach native Danja began playing the drums and keyboard in church.

While still a teenager Danja honed his interest in recording, graduating from cassettes and overdubs to make his early creations. He bought a six track shortly before finishing high school and soon found himself running with another Virginia local Teddy Riley.

"I did a song for Blackstreet on the last album they put out," Danja recalled.

In 2001 he had a chance meeting with Timbaland at a local music symposium. Danja would bump into his future partner again that evening at a gathering held at a mutual friend's house. Although Tim responded positively to his talent, even saying he'd be happy to pass the torch to Danja, nothing immediately came of their encounter. However, when Danja ran into Tim again 2 years later he didn't hesitate to play him some newly crafted music on his tour bus.

"I played it for him and he went crazy. After I played a few joints, he was like 'I still wanna work with you.' Around Christmas he flew me out to Miami to work with his artist John Doe," Danja recalled.

From that point on their partnership was solidified. "He viewed me as an equal way before anything was out. He always said 'You are my partner', never treated me like a keyboard player or programmer. It's always been a partnership, and still is to this day," Danja told SOHH.

Now based in Miami, Danja says his creative process is fairly straight forward.

"The majority of the time I beat Tim to the studio, dig through my sound library (he doesn't use samples), my synthesizers and drum kits and see what triggers something. Sometimes I might hear something before I get to the studio and I'll hum it until I get there. Whatever weird sound I can find I start with. I work like I'm doing an album - this is an up, after the up I do a mid, after the mid I do a ballad, then another mid. I just keep working on different styles and different tempos," Danja describes.

Oftentimes Danja and Timbaland will work independently, then come back together to polish tracks. During their studio sessions with Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake both producers recorded at the same time, sometimes with three or four keyboards hooked up - often finishing whole tracks in around fifteen minutes.

"He got this thing where he'll do something so crazy he'll leave me stuck. He'll play it and after everyone goes nuts he'll put his headphones down like 'Your Turn,'" Danja describes.

It was during one of these exchanges that the younger producer came up with current Timberlake hit "My Love."

"I put my headphones on and started doing my thing then, (he mimics the opening sounds of "My Love") Justin heard it through my headphones, took them off like 'What is that?' That's how that came about. Tim really tried me a little bit so I had to show him up," Danja explains. "It's real simple. I think we have a lot of fun and that's why it works so well. It's just a big vibe session."

After working a variety of off jobs, from construction to retail before finally catching a break, Danja's focus and determination has finally paid off.

"For anyone trying to get into it-definitely do not stop if it's something you believe in. I think I had everybody at one point say 'Why don't you do this or go to school or whatever else' but I believed in what I wanted to do," Danja said.

Jermaine Dupri Promises Mariah/Janet Duet On New Album

Earlier this month, Jermaine Dupri demonstrated he's a true showman by bringing out Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson during his set at the Summer Jam radio festival in New Jersey. Now, Dupri is thinking about how to pull the ultimate trump card and get the two legends on the same song.

In April, Carey hinted that she was very open to the collaboration (see
"Mariah Down To Work With Janet; Eve's Loss Is Busta's Gain"). "He never talked to me about that, but if Jermaine has a concept, we should go and write something," she told MTV Radio. "I love Janet. I've been a big fan of Janet since 'Con-tro-ol!'

"On Friday, JD said he is, in fact, developing an idea for Carey and his longtime girlfriend to do it up right on a song.

"It's gonna happen on this record," he said about the collaboration. "Please believe that. I got a mean idea, so look for it. We definitely gonna do a repackage on [Janet's 20 Years Old] once it comes out. Hopefully it's successful and people buy into it, then I'm going back in the studio.

"What happened was, when I was working with Janet, I got into the zone. This was my first time ever working with her. When I get into my zone with artists, I just want to create and create and create. That's what happened with me and Mariah [on The Emancipation of Mimi]. We don't run outta ideas; we keep coming up with sh--. The closer I get to that idea [for Janet and Mariah], the more I know where it should be at. It's feeling like it's gonna happen."Dupri also said the Janet and Mariah record — if he pulls it off — could appear on the initial run of 20 Years Old.

"It depends on how quick my mind moves," he said. "We're mixing records for [20 Years Old]. We're not done yet. When I did Usher's My Way album, the last record I created was 'You Make Me Wanna ... .' I'm thinking I might go back in, and I might tamper with it. ... We gotta try to figure it out."

JD hopes to have the Janet and Mariah duet mapped out and recorded before Carey goes on tour this summer. Dupri also said he's accepted Mariah's invite to go out on the road with her. He won't be at every single date, but he promises to pop up here and there and support his homie.

"I'mma go to the hot spots," he said of the tour. "She's going to Miami first. I'm definitely gonna be at that show. I'm definitely gonna be in New York, in Atlanta. That's my partner. Whatever she needs me to do, I'm there."

When he's not onstage, Jermaine already has a full plate of production scheduled for the rest of the year. He's working on a slew of his So So Def artists, including Johnta Austin, Manish Man, T. Waters and Young Capone. Bow Wow's next album is on Dupri's to-do list, as are records from 3LW, JoJo, Ludacris, Young Jeezy, Frankie J, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Nelly, Usher ("We gonna start on his record at the end of the year") and Mariah Carey once she gets off tour.

Janet's JD-produced "Call on Me," is the first single from the September 26 release 20 Years Old, and made its official debut Tuesday (June 20).

"It's a duet between her and Nelly," Dupri said. "It's the jump-off. It's really just a record about when you need a friend, somebody you need to talk to, just call on a person. It's a friend record. It ain't really a boyfriend/girlfriend record. The way Nelly and Janet is talking is more girlfriend/boyfriend, but it really goes out to friends."

Nelly being a close friend of JD made him a perfect candidate to rap on the song. Well, that and the fact that Nelly and Dupri have a super-smash under their belts already.

"Nelly, I try to do what I do with my friends," Dupri explained. "Me and him had just come off the success of 'Grillz' at the time I made this record. He was the person on my mind. "Especially since Janet only made records, not to disrespect Q-Tip or Heavy D, but as far as popular rappers in this day and time, Busta Rhymes was the only one. We was trying to go to the radio and not do the typical R&B featured record. I was trying to be more creative and find somebody who can do melody as well as rap on the record. Nelly don't really rap on this song, he's singing. He has that different style. That's kind of what the record is. We see that enough: R&B with a rapper feature. That's why I call this a duet as opposed to a feature."

With new singer/rapper collaborations in abundance, like Beyoncé and Jay-Z's "Deja Vu" and Ciara and Chamillionaire's "Get Up," JD said he really wanted Janet and Nelly to have their own lane.

"I never really pay attention to anybody else's record when I'm doing what I'm doing," he said. "I was just trying to give her the look she hasn't had in a minute. That would be both an incredible look on TV as well as a star moment, as well as a big record on radio. That's all the elements I was putting into making this record. We don't just have a record that's just a Nelly and Janet record. I believe this record is gonna be one of the biggest records on radio this year. Outside of who it is, it's a well-put-together song."

Missy Elliott to star in her own life story

Studio has acquired a pitch from scribe Dianne Houston based on Elliott's life. Robert De Niroand Jane Rosenthal are on board to produce through their Gothambased Tribeca Films shingle along with Elliott's manager Mona Scott. Project is currently untitled.

Houston came up with the idea and took it to Scott, who helped flesh it out with the scribe and Elliott. Houston then took the project to longtime friend Rosenthal. Tribeca has a first-look
deal with Universal.

Elliott has been in business with Universal before: She had a role in the Jessica Alba starrer "Honey."

The deal for her biopic follows films based on two of rap's biggest male names, 50 Cent("Get Rich or Die Tryin'") and Eminem ("8 Mile")
. Universal distributed the latter.

Born in Portsmouth, Va., in 1971, Elliott began her musical career with the girl group Sista. She then segued to a producing career before breaking out as a solo artist more than 10 years ago. Elliott writes and produces much of her own music.

Houston received an Oscar nom for her work on the short film "Tuesday Morning Ride." She penned the recent release "Take the Lead" and sold a pitch to Participant Prods. titled "Zoot," based on the life story of Zoot Valasco.

Review of Beyonce's new album and full clip of new single

Artist : Beyonce
Album : B'Day
Rating : 4/5
Release Date : September 5, 2006
Label : Sony BMG Music Entertainment
Single : "Deja Vu" ft. Jay-Z
Producer(s) : Beyonce Knowles, Rich Harrison, Rodney Jerkins, Swizz Beatz, Sean Garrett, The Neptunes

While basking in the release of a new movie, "Dreamgirls" this december, Golden girl Beyonce prepares for the release of her sophmore effort "B'Day" this september. Holding tons of funky horns, loud riffs and sassy lyrics, "B'Day" is shaping up to be this years' hottest fall release with production from heavy-hitters The Neptunes, Rich Harrison, Darkchild & Swizz Beatz. The Lead single "Deja Vu," being rush released due to airplay in Houston, L.A., and New York is turning out to be a radio burner with it's soaring trumpets, thumping bassline and simple yet catchy lyrics from Beyonce. With tracks like "Ring The Alarm," she belts out pure seduction on layers of sirens over a bass-heavy beat. "Freedom Dress" can easily be "Crazy In Love pt. II" with it's cowbells and the club feel of the track. On tracks like, "Give It To Momma," she demands her respect and gets what she wants over a pure funky beat, think cowbells, congos, bongos and chants like "the infamous uh-oh". There's also collaborations from her boyfriend, rapper/beau Jay-Z on songs like first single, "Deja Vu" and also a track penned and co-produced by writer Sean Garrett with Swizz Beats, "Hottest Chick In The Game" tells the world just who Beyonce is, or shall I say "Sasha". In fact, Beyonce's sophmore effort is all about demanding respect as a female and the teachings of working what you've got! Spoiler? Yeah right.

Full version, I believe this was produced by Rodney Jerkins, I was told. This is her first single from her new album titled B'Day, which is in stores in September.

Young Jeezy-Inspiration: Thug Motivation 102

Forget whatever you did last night - Young Jeezy was in the studio writing rhymes to Timbaland beats in one room, working with Just Blaze in another, and having Keyshia Cole re-record vocals to their collab track in a third. All in the course of finishing up this fall's crazily anticipated Inspiration: Thug Motivation 102. We got to hear some tracks from it in the company of the Snowman yesterday, and give you the rundown after the jump.

"Hypnotized," perhaps Shawty Redd's most goth-ed out beat yet. Overdriven, heaven vs. hell synthesizers and quadruple-time hihats provide a bed for Jeezy's whispers (and absolutely massive, screwed-down backing vocals). Even though many of the new tracks we heard stretch away from Jeezy's debut blueprint, there's more than enough songs like "Hypnotized" to satisfy the Lets Get It faithful. 60+ have been recorded so far, and the plan is to take 14 for the album and save the best of the rest for a follow-up to DJ Drama's You Can't Ban The Snowman mixtape.

"Bury Me A G", a Pac-referencing, soul-sampling cut where Jeezy envisions his own death and bellows "Bury me in Evisu jeans, a USDA top and a throwaway glock" on the chorus.

A new Akon collaboration, although the song Jeezy calls "Soul Survivor Pt 2" isn't that one, but his track with Keyshia Cole - which, even though we only heard a snippet of the demo version, can say that it lives up to his hype.

"She Can Get It", a Scott Storch-produced "girl song" with TI on assist. Jeezy is skeptical about heading into this territory, even for just one song - and although "She Can Get It" isn't bad at all, we're pretty skeptical too - but having TI on the song definitely helps. "That's already Tip's lane," Jeezy says. "So why not do it with him?" He went on to tell us about an "even crazier" club track recorded with Ne-Yo and Ludacris. "I played that for my people, and they we're like, you cannot put this out!"

"Black Bandanna", which, between it's gruff, catchy chorus and guitar sample, made Jeezy remark "This one's gonna get the white kids putting their rag up!"

A "west coast" song with Snoop that isn't G-Funk, but a cinematic ride-out track (think purple Michael Mann sunsets) that's smooth as fuck while still keeping a uneasy, menacing feel throughout - to our ears, this is perhaps the best example of Jeezy trying new sonics but keeping the same Trapper Of The Year charm that made us love him in the first place.

Preview Nelly Furtado's Loose

Nelly Furtado’s greatest strength has always been her musical versatility.

On Loose, the folksy blend of styles that made the Portuguese-Canadian pop chanteuse famous is still there. But this time, most of the Timbaland-produced tracks sound like ’80s throwbacks, with techno synths and new-age chorals added for good measure. And while she loses herself in Gwen Stefani–like posturing, as on “Glow,” and ethnic fusions like “No Hay Igual” or “Te Busque,” Furtado masterfully combines Spanish and pop influences in her own unique way. For this artist, it’s always been about finding the perfect mix.

Amerie new album news

Amerie hates to feel like she’s being boxed in. That’s why the amiable Washington D.C. song siren is calling her impending album None of The Above. “It’s called None of The Above because I feel like as people we never like to be in boxes and myself, I never like to feel like I’m categorized,” Amerie exclusively told Vibe.com, Tuesday night (May 23), at the Sprite Street Couture Showcase. “Everyone is always trying to put me in a box, as far as growing up, ethnicity-wise and racially like ‘What Am I?’ ‘What do I think I’m more of?’ “I feel like with this album, I really got to have fun and create a lot of different things.” Amerie also disclosed that None of The Above is close to being completed and should be ready for a Fall release. Although Amerie didn’t reveal any plans for possible features, she did say that she co-produced four songs on her new album. Before leaving the Sprite fashion showcase, Amerie kindly whipped out her iPod and let Vibe.com be the first outlet to exclusively preview three of her songs. The three cuts alone, revealed an array of musical tastes, ranging from up-tempo funk tracks to a mid-tempo ballad. “I mean I just create music. I just do my thing,” said Amerie. "It (the new album) goes from like ‘70s funk to the ‘80s music that we all grew up listening to and I just meshed it all together with my signature style.” A confirmed release date of Amerie's None of The Above hasn't been announced as of press time.

Nas To Drop Album This September

While performing with The Roots at Radio City Music Hall on Thursday night, Nas dropped the news that he will be releasing a new album in September. Nas finished his 15-minute set by telling the crowd, “I'm working hard for y’all. I got an album coming out in September.” The CD will reportedly be called Hip-Hop Is Dead, according to Billboard.com.

The album will be Nas' first for Def Jam, the label he signed with once he and Def Jam President Jay-Z ended their long-running feud. There is not much news circulating about what the album will sound like, but Black Eyed Peas leader will.i.am told Billboard.com that he was scheduled to record with Nas.

Back In February, Nas told MTV, "I'm ready to go — I'm ready to kick ass. The movement is bigger than what someone says about Nas for the moment. I've always had someone say something about me. I'm one of the most crucified artists in the game, thank you! This is what challenges me, what makes me go on." Jay-Z said of signing Nas, "We've been chosen as leaders. We have to lead. We can't follow people's perception of what this union is. I didn't sign Nas, I partnered with Nas. You can't sign an artist of Nas' stature, you can only partner with him."

New Joe Budden Album Coming in October

After months of being shelved, rapper Joe Budden's sophomore opus The Growth will finally see the light of day later this year. "The album will be out in October...It's crack," an excited Budden told AllHipHop.com. "The music is definitely nuts. The people will forget I was even gone. I been gone for so long I done worked with just about every producer there is, from Cool & Dre to Swizz to Timbaland, the list can go on and on." Budden may have been off the mainstream radar for awhile, but the Jersey-bred rapper has remained busy on the mixtape circuit. Until his official return, he plans to tide fans over with another underground offering. "I'm actually gonna put Mood Muzik Part 3 out before [The Growth ]," said Budden. "I gotta do that." The Growth will feature production from Just Blaze, as well as Dub B (aka White Boy), who handled the majority of tracks on Budden's self-titled debut. The new offering will be released under Def Jam. But while Budden's love-hate relationship with his label has been well documented, the rapper continues to remain diplomatic, simply stating "I love Def Jam." Despite his solid rap career, fans may be surprised to learn of Budden's initial entry into the world of entertainment. "I did used to sing long ago," Budden admitted. "I was twelve or thirteen years old when my mom used to make me go in the choir to keep me out of trouble." But don't expect Budden to exercise his singing pipes anytime soon. "I smoked too much weed and all types of stuff to have that going on today. No more singing," he said. "There's no chance of me singing. I don't think I sound as good as I used to. I used to be nice though."

The Game's new album release delayed

There are conflicting reports on whether The Game’s second album "THE DOCTOR’S ADVOCATE" will be out this year. The earliest that it will be out currently is August 29 but there are also reports that it will be delayed until next year. Dr. Dre’s highly anticipated album "Detox" as well as Bishop Lamont’s Aftermath debut "The Reformation" are scheduled for a Summer/Fall of 2007 release. It’s currently being decided which of those two albums will be released first. Eve’s Full Surface/Aftermath debut is planed for a winter of 2006/ early 2007 release and will feature production from Dr. Dre, Swizz Beatz and Scott Storch. Busta Rhymes’ "The Big Bang" and Stat Quo’s "Statlanta" are confirmed for release this year. Dre has finished his production duties for Busta and Stat’s Aftermath debuts and is currently working on "Detox", "The Reformation" and Snoop Dogg’s "The Blue Carpet Treatment".

Kelly Rowland Album Bumped To 2007

The release of Kelly Rowland's sophomore solo set for Columbia/Sony Urban Music, "My Story: Kelly Rowland," has been moved from July to first-quarter 2007. Manager Mathew Knowles says more time is needed to properly set up the project. "We want to make sure our marketing strategy is a multi-tiered approach that capitalizes on the synergies afforded by her other projects," Knowles tells Billboard. Asked if more songs will now be recorded for the pushed-back set, Knowles says, "If she finds a better song or songs to add, we'll use them. But that's not the reason for changing the date. [Everyone] is pleased with the record Kelly made."As for Rowland's "other projects," she co-hosted the fifth annual MTV Asia Awards ceremony May 6, where she premiered her new single "Gots to Go" for a worldwide audience. Tomorrow (May 13), the Destiny's Child co-founding member will be in Atlanta to kick off the five-city Soft Sheen-Carson/Vixen Model Search for women of color.Rowland previously said the upcoming album is more personal than her 2002 solo debut "Simply Deep," which bowed at No. 12 on The Billboard 200 and has sold nearly 600,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

"This album is very different from the last record. It was so alternative and this record is urban," she said last month during a playback of the new set for members of the media. "I wanted to go back to my roots [because] that's where I started and that's what feels natural to me."

Keys Wants Two Johns — Mayer And Legend — For Next LP

Album will likely be influenced by her recent trip to Africa, she says.

Alicia Keys says she hopes to follow in the footsteps of legendary entertainers like Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand, who were lauded for both their acting and music.

For now, though, Keys' game plan is to tackle one at a time, so she didn't do any music for her first film, "Smokin' Aces," with Ben Affleck. But how about making some music for her second feature, "The Nanny Diaries," which stars Scarlett Johansson?

"Probably not," Keys said Tuesday on the movie's Brooklyn set. "You never know, but even with the other movie, it wasn't about doing the music for the movie. I think later on I'll try getting into acting as well as doing the entire soundtrack. But right now I want to focus directly on the acting."

Still, music isn't entirely on hold. She's already mapping out her next LP.

"I'm in the studio now," she said. "I'm actually taking a different approach for this album. I'm taking the approach of writing everything first, kind of old-school style. Before cats stepped in the studio, the song was written, the music was done — that kind of thing. The idea of it was already developed. I want to do that.

"I want to write a lot, sit at the piano a lot and get all these things out that I'm going through and experienced. I just got back from Africa. I've been seeing things in my life that changed my whole perspective on everything."
Specifically, Keys said, she witnessed firsthand what extreme poverty is like.

"The way government takes advantage of people, there's so much disconnect, segregation — the way it's set up to just destroy the human spirit," she said. "So many things I've witnessed and felt and seen, I'd never seen before."
The Grammy winner already has an idea of who she wants to work with. Here's a hint: It will be out of the norm.

"Me and John Mayer are gonna write some stuff together," she said. "I love his writing style. He's funny, very witty. I think we'll do some writing together. Linda Perry, our styles combining would be very interesting — a soulful rock-blues thing. John Legend would be an interesting collaboration. We were on tour together but we never sat down and vibed and wrote. I want to do some interesting collaborations, things that are different, and see where it leads."

For His Next Album, Jamie Foxx Wants To Get In Your Bedroom

Jamie Foxx said when he's traveling to promote his Unpredictable LP — as he was recently in the U.K., Paris and Germany — round bottoms keep him down to earth."I bring pictures of girls with real big booties with me because ... it keeps me grounded when I see a real big ass," he laughed while stopping in England to talk to MTV Europe. On the serious tip, the singer/actor said he really missed his family."What I miss the most when I'm away from home is my daughter, my dogs — I just got two new pit bulls, man," he said. "I miss them badly, and that's about it."The last time Foxx was in Europe was to promote his movie "Any Given Sunday." He said going abroad always gets his creative juices flowing."When you travel and you see different people, it makes you want to come up with other things, and that's what it was about," he said. "That's what Ray Charles was talking about, that's what Quincy Jones was talking about: going outside your borders. Going over to Europe and just traveling and just meeting new people and getting fragments and pieces of personalities and putting them together in music."The first two singles from his album are the sexy "Unpredictable" and "DJ Play a Love Song." But Foxx said when the time comes for him to hit the bedroom, he doesn't listen to his tracks. Well, the ones people know, anyway."I actually don't get it on to the music on my record," he said. "But some of the songs that I don't release, I actually do it to those songs. It's a little too much on the nose when you are playing your own record, but I have got some songs that didn't make the album that are, like, real great bedroom songs, and I'm going to re-release [Unpredictable with] those."But what I believe is this — is that music is two different things," he continued. "It either gets you in the dance club or it gets you in the bedroom. Everything else is either 'save the trees' or 'peace and good life' and all that. I want to give people a bedroom record because it's been a long time since they had a bedroom record where you can say, 'Let's slow the music down and see what's going on in there.' "News on the Unpredictable re-release is scarce, but Foxx did say to look for one of the greatest MCs of all time on the set (see "The Greatest MCs Of All Time")."We got some re-releases that myself and LL Cool J — we're just going to knock the top of your head off," he boasted. "[We have] a few things that we have up our sleeve, so it's going to be something to look forward to this year."Foxx's plate also includes the release of the films "Miami Vice" and "Dreamgirls," as well as a tour in support of Unpredictable. Down the line, the Oscar winner said, he wants to return to his comedy roots and take that show on the road as well."I'll keep doing the music, I will go out with a music tour, but there is going to be a point — like maybe a year and a half, two years — when myself and Chris Rock — we've already talked about this — we're going to go out and talk about our past five or 10 years of our lives," he said. "My tentative title is 'Where Do I Start?'"You never lose that thirst of doing comedy," he continued. "I think once you lose that, you start to kind of, like, fade away or get behind your big gates or your big house. So we got that on the back burner. As soon as we get [these albums and movies] out of the way, then we crack open those jokes."For more on Jamie Foxx, check out the feature "The Metamorphosis Of Jamie Foxx."

Tweet collaborates with Whitney Houston

Tweet and Whitney Houston collabo It's been a little while since we heard from the Southern Hummingbird singer (a year to be exact), but I got some inside info that Tweet has been recording for a new album since early this year. She has recorded a duet with Whitney Houston (can't wait to hear to this) for Whitney's new album and another one slated to appear on Tweet's. The song for Tweet’s album is titled "Another Day". Not too long ago, Tweet was seen leaving the studio with Timbaland and Chili of TLC, which could most likely mean a Chili/Tweet collabo on Chili’s new album or on Tweet's. Tweet has written two songs for Monica's new album and also for Fantasia, and will wrap up studio recording sessions this fall.

New Tweet songs

Cool Breeze written by C. Keys, N. Stewart, C.X. Brockman, C. Bereal (produced by Craig X. Brockman, Nisan Stewart, and Charlie Bereal)

Faith Evans to Release New Album in Fall

Faith Evans to Release New Album in FallR&B artist Faith Evans is hard at work on her follow-up to her debut album on Capitol Records, "The First Lady". The new album has yet to be titled but Faith has been recording tracks for the new set scheduled to hit stores this fall. Last week faith was in New York with producer Chucky Thompson laying down tracks for the new album. Chucky is best known for working with Faith on her debut album as well as her latest album "The First Lady". Other producers include Jazze Pha, who's laced hits the last two years for Ciara, T.I., and Field Mobb. Rapper T.I. is said to appear on the set, however at this time T.I. and Faith have not recorded together for the album. Word is T.I. is scheduled to appear on a track produced by Jazze Pha. Other producers for the set will be announced at a later date. The album according to Faith's camp will be real street, but of course that doesn't mean fans won't be treated to classic R&B ballads, something the First Lady is known for. Expect Faith's new single from the new album before the summer is out. Faith has also recorded with artists Coko and Lil' Mo the three have recorded a new version of "Endow Me", originally recorded by The Clark Sisters. The song will appear on Coko's up-coming Gospel release, due this August.

Info on Monica's new album

Monica-Street Butterfly

Today I got the opportunity to preview some of the songs Monica has recorded her album titled Street Butterfly, and I'm proud to say that she has once again out done herself. After the critically acclaimed After The Storm went platinum with 950,000 sales in the U.S. and two million worldwide, Miss Thang has returns with a brand new album due this summer from J Records. The album features some top-notch production from Jermaine Dupri, Missy Elliott (who spawned her two hit singles plus two other tracks from After The Storm), Brian Michael Cox, Dallas Austin, The Underdogs, Warryn Campbell, among others. With outstanding tracks like "Stand Up Lady" featuring ATL king T.I., "I Like Your..", "More Than A Woman", "Necessary", and "You Will Never Know," Street Butterfly is an album Monica fans will enjoy. The "Stand Up Lady" is one of the most hottest tracks on the album. There's also "Make It Last(All Night Long)" (with Twista) that would also give Mo a hit if the label releases it as a single. There are also some hot collaborations with Missy, Keyshia Cole, and Young Jeezy. Mo really came correct with this album. If you liked After The Storm, Street Butterfly is an album you don't want to miss.

Kelly Rowland Promo

Destiny's Child principal Kelly Rowland is putting the finishing touches on her second solo set, "My Story: Kelly Rowland," which will arrive July 11 via Columbia/Sony Urban Music. The singer previewed cuts from the album for members of the media last week. Singer/songwriter Tank wrote and produced several tracks and is featured on "The Show," while guest appearances from Snoop Dogg, Shawnna and Remy Ma are still in the works. Rowland is also considering adding Houston rappers to the mix. Rowland says the upcoming album is more personal than her 2002 solo debut "Simply Deep," which bowed at No. 12 on The Billboard 200 and has sold nearly 600,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. "This album is very different from the last record. It was so alternative and this record is urban," says Rowland. "I wanted to go back to my roots [because] that's where I started and that's what feels natural to me." Many of the tracks are relationship-driven, something Rowland says she is not hesitant about discussing. "I just went in the studio and just did me, because I think that's when you get your best product," she says. "That's when it's just natural. It just flew out of my mouth and came out in lyrics [and] I had great writers involved."

Here is the tentative track listing for "My Story: Kelly Rowland":

"Gots To Go"
"Work Her Man"
"Still in Love With My Ex"
"Ghetto"
"The Show" featuring Tank
"Every Thought Is You"
"Better Without You"
"Wat It Do"
"Flashback"
"Tell Me"
"Can't Do It Again"
"Just Me"
"Back On"
"This Is Love"
